The Jacksonville Jaguars wasted no time revamping their secondary in free agency. Besides re-signing Sidney Jones and Tre Herndon, the team added cornerback Shaquill Griffin and safeties Rudy Ford and Rayshawn Jenkins. Even though the group looks in better shape than it did a few months ago, the Jags need to keep adding talent to their safety room.

Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report recently wrote about the Jags’ biggest need late in free agency and adding a safety came up. He says that the position has been a weakness since “the days of Tashaun Gipson Sr. and Barry Church” and believes that they need to find someone to line up next to Jenkins, as it’s “hard to get fired up” about the current group of Jarrod Wilson, Daniel Thomas, and Andrew Wingard.

Gagnon then says that if the Jags want to add a safety in the second wave of free agency, they could target Malik Hooker, Tre Boston, or Damarious Randall. Nevertheless, waiting until the draft to add a safety may be Jacksonville’s best course of action right now.

The Jacksonville Jaguars must keep adding talent to their secondary.

Drafting linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah with the 25th overall pick — the Jaguars’ second first-round pick in 2021’s draft — makes sense but so does choosing TCU safety Trevon Moehrig. Both of them are talented playmakers that should bolster Jacksonville’s back seven. In fact, Pro Football Focus’ draft simulator sees Moehrig as one of their most likely choices with that selection.

On the bright side, the Jaguars will have options in case Moehrig is gone by the time they are on the clock at 25 or if they want to address the position in another round. Even though Andre Cisco is raw, he will be available in the second round. UCF Richie Grant should be another alternative in the second or third round, so even though the Jags should draft another safety, it doesn’t have to be in the first round.

Head coach Urban Meyer said before that the team would prioritize revamping the secondary this offseason. They already started the process and added a few playmakers in free agency but need to continue doing so in the draft.
