The Jacksonville Jaguars needed a backup for running back James Robinson and they found in Carlos Hyde, who played for head coach Urban Meyer back at Ohio State. In a recent sit-down with the local media, he shared his reasons for joining the Jags and looked back at his first stint with the team.

Hyde said that signing with the Jaguars was a no-brainer once he saw Meyer became the head coach. He added that he’s glad it happened while he was still playing and later opened up about his 2018 stint in Jacksonville. He acknowledged that things didn’t work out at the time, as he was going through a lot and had personal issues. He then said that he wishes things could’ve gone better but added that there was a lot of growth that year.

Later in the sit-down, Hyde mentioned that he hasn’t talked about his role with the team nor met with Robinson. However, he says he will be a pro, and leader for his teammates, someone positive they can learn from. He also talked about this tenure with the Seattle Seahawks in 2020 and general manager Trent Baalke, who originally drafted him when he held the same position with the San Francisco 49ers in 2014.

Hyde said he had a great time in Seattle and thought they would make it to the Super Bowl but had a great experience playing for Brian Schottenheimer, who was the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator then and is now the Jaguars’ passing game coordinator. On the other hand, he says he had a good relationship with Baalke even though he hadn’t really kept in touch with him.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ running back room looks in good shape.

Back in 2018, Hyde joined the Jaguars via trade. He appeared in eight games with two starts and had 58 carries for 189 yards and no touchdowns. He left the team the following offseason to join the Houston Texans. However, there are reasons to believe his second time around will be better. Over the last two years, the running back appeared in 24 games with 15 starts and racked up 326 yards for 1,426 yards and ten touchdowns.

The Jags have a stud in Robinson and Meyer previously said the team wants to build around him. However, he needed a dependable backup that can step on the field if he has to catch his breath or miss a few games. He now has him in Hyde, which makes him one of this year’s free agency winners.
