Jacksonville Jaguars could use a versatile playmaker like Demetric Felton
NFL teams are becoming more and more creative with the kinds of players they use in their offensive systems. The Jacksonville Jaguars are desperate for this kind of firepower that can help transform their offense and they have a chance to do so in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft with running back/wide receiver Demetric Felton.
There are a ton of playmakers in this draft and Demetric Felton is a name not to take lightly. Pass-catching running backs have become a hot commodity in the league and that’s exactly the kind of versatility you get with Felton.
Felton was a three-star recruit according to 247 Sports coming out of high school. He’s an incredibly athletic and versatile player which can be credited to his track and field background. This is another reason as to why he had such success switching to running back during his junior season after playing wide receiver his first two seasons.
Felton is a plug-and-play kind of player on offense, who can run the ball with ease and has the ability to catch the ball in the flat, in the slot, and out wide. In 2019, he set the UCLA record for receptions by a running back in a season with 55. In 2020, he had a huge jump in production with 668 yards and five touchdowns rushing while receiving for 159 yards and three touchdowns.
There is a ton of potential to still be harnessed with Felton. He could very well end up being a similar player to Alvin Kamara and Deebo Samuel. He’d be a valuable contributor on the offense and special teams but is quite small in frame to be the lead back anywhere.
What stands out the most about Felton—as do other running back/wide receiver hybrids—is his lateral agility, ability to create plays in space, good vision, and elusiveness. Urban Meyer should press to have someone as multifaceted as Felton on his offense.
