Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence will likely be the Jacksonville Jaguars’ choice with the first overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft. Nevertheless, Zach Wilson has garnered positive reviews and has seen his draft stock rise ahead of the selection meeting. Should this give the ‘Jags’ a pause and consider taking him with the top pick?

Matt Miller of Draft Scout said that he heard from scouts Wilson was climbing up draft boards and was making a serious push for as the top quarterback in this year’s class, and Eric Calko of Optimum Scouting backed up Miller’s assertion. Mark Schlereth of Fox Sports has also said that he was more impressed with Wilson than Lawrence after watching him on tape.

Would the Jacksonville Jaguars consider taking Wilson over Lawrence?

The Jaguars probably earmarked the first overall pick to take Lawrence, but they haven’t stopped performing due diligence on other prospects, that’s just how the evaluation process goes. When it comes to the draft, you should always expect the unexpected, but it seems like Jacksonville is leaning toward the Clemson standout. There’s no reason to doubt Wilson is indeed rising up draft boards, but that doesn’t mean the ‘Jags’ are throwing Lawrence’s report out of the window.

Keep in mind that it was Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer’s idea to organize Lawrence’s pro day ahead of the surgery in his non-throwing shoulder, and he got as close to the quarterback as he could throughout the whole throwing session. Moreover, Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN suggested that the opportunity to work with the Tennessee native is what convinced Meyer to take the job.

The fact Miller sees Wilson as ‘Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech all over again’ can do nothing but help the BYU product. Nevertheless, Lawerence is still the better prospect. If anything, it seems like this year’s draft is going to feature two very good quarterbacks and whoever ends up taking Wilson will end up with a franchise player, it’s just that it may not be the Jaguars.
