Jacksonville Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence is PFF’s All-Era QB prospect

The Jacksonville Jaguars will likely use the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to take Trevor Lawrence, who is arguably the best college prospect since Andrew Luck in 2012. Pro Football Focus recently recognized how good the Clemson quarterback has been.

Lawrence made PFF’s All-Era NFL Prospect Team, which includes the best college players the advance statistic site has graded in the last seven years. Michael Renner of PFF points out the Tennessee native had three straight years with 90.0-plus grades and believes that the selection was easy to make.

In fact, Renner opines it was more difficult to choose the honorable mention, as Joe Burrow, Baker Mayfield, and Zach Wilson were deserving of the nod. Keep in mind that even though Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields outplayed Lawrence in the Sugar Bowl, the latter is still considered the consensus top quarterback in this year’s class.

Lawerence finished his three-year career at Clemson with 758 completions for 10,098 passing yards, 90 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2020 but ultimately lost to Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith.

Lawrence is the clear-cut top prospect in 2021’s draft. There have been years when there isn’t a surefire first overall pick, but this isn’t one of them. As good as Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell or Smith are, the odds of them being drafted before the Clemson quarterback are slim to none. On the off chance the Jaguars traded down or traded away the top selection, the Clemson product would still get drafted with the first overall pick.

Owner Shahid Khan previously talked about the importance of having a franchise quarterback, so it’s highly unlikely the ‘Jags’ will trade the first overall pick and select someone other than Lawrence even though he’s scheduled to have surgery on his non-throwing shoulder.

There won’t be much mystery nor intrigue in 2021’s draft. Lawrence is the best quarterback prospect and PFF’s recent recognition confirms that notion.
