How can the Jacksonville Jaguars have just the second-best HC opening?

This is going to be one of the most hectic offseasons in Jacksonville Jaguars’ history. They are currently in the process of hiring a general manager and the head coach. Based on the surplus of cap space and draft picks, the ‘Jags’ should the most desirable head coaching job, but do they? One national writer believes it is just the second best.

Mike Florio believes the Los Angeles Chargers have the most attractive head-coach opening in this hiring cycle because they have a franchise quarterback in Justin Herbert and a roster full of talented players such as defensive end Joey Bosa and safety Derwin James and wide receivers Mike Williams and Keenan Allen.

Meanwhile, Florio thinks the Jaguars’ head-coach vacancy ranks as the second-best due to the low expectations surrounding the team and the abundance of cap space and draft picks. He thinks they could be the top destination down the road if Trevor Lawrence, whom the Jaguars will likely take with the first overall pick in 2021’s draft, becomes their franchise quarterback. In the meantime, he opines the ‘Bolts are the best head-coaching destination, as Herbert has shown ‘he can get it done at the NFL level’.

Why the Jacksonville Jaguars have the best head-coach vacancy.

This may be a matter of taste, but the Jaguars offer the challenge of building a contender from scratch. That alone should make them the most appealing head-coaching destination. While it’s true the Chargers have a franchise quarterback in place and a stacked roster, the ‘Jags’ will offer their next head coach (and their general manager) the opportunity to mold the team however they see fit. This Jacksonville team is projected to have $77.61 million in cap space in 2021 while Los Angeles will have just $29.1 million at their disposal.

Moreover, the ‘Jags’ will have 11 draft selections, including the first overall and four in the first two rounds of the draft. Although they have significantly less talent than the ‘Bolts’, they could quickly turn things around with a good draft and the right free-agent additions.
