Jacksonville Jaguars 4 biggest storylines from 2020 season
The Jacksonville Jaguars have had an eventful 2020 season.
They may have lost 15 straight games this season but they found a way to win by securing the number one pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. The biggest news surrounding the Jaguars right now is their impending head coach and general manager hires and arguably the most important—Clemson quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, has officially declared for the draft.
Here are four of the biggest storylines from the Jaguars 2020 regular season:
James Robinson undrafted rookie record
James Robinson was a pleasant surprise for the Jaguars this season after going undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft. The position of running back was uncertain for Jacksonville heading in the offseason but Robinson’s emergence during training camp ultimately made their decision easy. He was easily the highlight of their disaster of a season and broke two rookie rushing records along the way; most yards from scrimmage by an undrafted running back and the undrafted rookie rushing record.
Jaguars bench Gardner Minshew following injury
Gardner Minshew’s first game on the season started out strong but his performance quickly went downhill. Jacksonville’s struggles weren’t all on Minshew and while he showed some areas of improvement from his rookie season, he showed a lot of regression as well.
Following Jacksonville’s week seven loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Minshew was benched after it was revealed he was playing behind a thumb injury.
Jaguars fire general manager Dave Caldwell
Following Jacksonville’s Week 11 loss to the Cleveland Browns, the Jaguars fired general manager Dave Caldwell, who had served under that title since 2013. It was the right move to make and an argument could be made that it should have happened even sooner. Caldwell was a part of the movement that traded away and drove out key players while struggling to acquire new talent at the same time.
Jaguars rumored to pursue Urban Meyer as head coach
Shortly before Jacksonville’s season finale, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Jaguars would likely be moving on from head coach Doug Marrone (to which they did) and that former Ohio State head coach would be a top target.
This report garnered a lot of mixed reactions from Jaguars fans. Some reports continue to say Urban Meyer is the target, but others contradict this statement. Owner Shad Kahn said that he hasn’t even had discussions with Meyer.
