Should Jacksonville Jaguars regret drafting K’Lavon Chaisson in 2020?
The Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t gotten much from K’Lavon Chaisson in 2020.
The Jacksonville Jaguars used the 20th overall selection in this year’s draft to chose defensive defensive end K’Lavon Chaisson. At the time, the team expected the LSU standout to fill the void defensive end Calais Campbell’s departure left in the offseason. However, that vision hasn’t come to fruition, and looking back, it’s fair to wonder if the ‘Jags’ regret drafting him.
Chris Roling of Bleacher Report recently wrote about draft choices teams may regret making in 2020. One of the names that came up on the list was Chaisson’s. Roling signals the rookie’s lack of sacks and his inability to generate pressure upfront as reasons for including him in his article.
There’s still time for K’Lavon Chaisson to prove the Jacksonville Jaguars right.
Roling also brought up Chaisson’s 48.5 Pro Football Focus overall grade. In the rookie’s favor, the advance statistics site has also recognized that he has played better in recent weeks and gave him a season-high 76.9 grade for his performance against the Tennesee Titans in Week 14. In that game, he recorded three quarterback hits and earned an 87.8 pass-rush grade.
It’s true that Chaisson hasn’t played up to expectations and is going through growing pains in 2020, but it’s too early to give up on him. The Jaguars defense is struggling as a whole and it might take time for the defensive end to develop. He certainly has the physical tools to thrive, but he’s in a less-than-stellar situation.
Although Chaisson may end up becoming a bust, it’s too soon to tell whether he can turn into the playmaker the Jaguars hoped he would be when they drafted him. He certainly has to play better, but he hasn’t been put in a position to succeed either. There are still two weeks left in the season, and although it’s not much, the defensive end will have a little bit of time to finish the year strong.
This Jacksonville team will likely undergo plenty of chances in the offseason. The current coaching staff will probably be gone and there will be a new one in place. It’s not a given, there’s a chance Chaisson could benefit from the change. The Jaguars are certainly rooting for him to show they made the right decision.
