. . Ryquell Armstead, running back. . player. 52.

It would be foolish to select any player in the fifth round expecting him to be a key contributor right out of the gate. Even though it’s unlikely the Jaguars planned Ryquell Armstead to have a big role for the team, they surely expected more than 35 carries for 108 yards.

In Armstead’s defense, he became infected with COVID-19 earlier this year and that’s something he doesn’t have control over. Regardless of how he got it, his health is more important than his impact on the football field. Even though many people wil recover within two weeks, Armstead has been hospitalized twice and has been hampered by plenty of complications related to the virus.

The sophomore running back is expected to make a full recovery but even if he returns, there may no longer be a roster spot for him. Rookie James Robinson has been a revelation at the position, and the team may decide to part ways with all other ball-carriers on the team and bring in a new batch via draft and free agency next year.

Armstead might have a last chance to prove he can be part of the team’s long-plans next offseason, but his odds of making the roster don’t currently look too good.
