Jacksonville Jaguars will need give to James Robinson help in the future
The Jacksonville Jaguars have a stud in running back James Robinson.
Finding a featured running back in the offseason won’t be a high priority for the Jacksonville Jaguars, as rookie James Robinson has been a revelation and is already among the best players at the position. However, they should consider bringing in someone in the offseason to help him take the load off his shoulders.
Robinson has been pretty durable in 20202 and hasn’t missed any games with injuries. All in all, he’s racked up 212 carries for 968 yards and seven touchdowns. Moreover, he’s hauled in 42 receptions for 310 and two touchdowns.
The Illinois State standout currently leads all rookie running backs in rushing yards and is third in the league. Even though the Jaguars’ passing game has been inconsistent and opposing defenses have stacked the box to stop the running game, he is averaging 4.6 yards per carry.
The Jacksonville Jaguars need to protect Robinson.
After Robinson, wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. has the most rushing attempts by a Jaguars’ player with 14. Chris Thompson is next on the list with seven. It’s great that Robinson has proven to be durable and effective, but the kind of workload he’s getting is not the one that leads to a fruitful career.
In defense of the Jaguars, there’s no one else they can turn to right now. Backup running back Dare Ogunbowale has had two carries in the season and Devine Ozigbo’s role is on special teams. The gap between them and Robinson is steep, so it makes sense to leave the latter on the field.
Nevertheless, they need to upgrade the backup running back position in the offseason. They don’t even have to sign a big-name free agent or use a high draft selection on a prospect. They could find a solid player in the middle of the 2021 NFL Draft, and there will be many talented prospects in that stage of the process such as Georgia’s Zamir White or Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard.
Nobody is hoping Robinson misses time in the future, but in case he does, this Jacksonville team should have the best possible insurance it can get.
