Lovie Smith may not be the coach the Jacksonville Jaguars may look for.

It seems like forever since Lovie Smith reached the Super Bowl on the strength of one of the best defenses in the 2000s. At the time, the former Chicago Bears head coach assembled a team full of talented players such as cornerback Charles Tillman, linebacker Brian Urlacher, defensive end Alex Brown and linebacker Lance Briggs.

Even before his stint as a head coach in the ‘Windy City’, Smith had been know for his defensive savviness. He helped the Rams defense become one of the best in the NFL and ranked second in points allowed in 2001, his first year as their defensive coordinator.

Smith’s success in Chicago started to fade and was given the boot in 2012. He would take a year off and accept the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ head coaching job in 2014. His tenure didn’t stay long, as he wasn’t able to replicate the defensive performances he had with the Bears and was fired after posting an 8-24 record in two years at the helm.

He’s now employed by the University of Illinois and has racked up a 17-38 record in his five-year tenure as the head coach. Looking at his recent work, it may be fair to say the game may have passed him by.
