It’s uncertain how much the Jacksonville Jaguars would improve with Mayhew.
The San Francisco 49ers haven’t had much success on the football field in 2020. At the moment of writing, they currently have a 5-6 record and are in the cellar of the NFC West. However, they reached the Super Bowl last year and were a few plays away from going back home holding the Lombardy Trophy. They reached 2019’s championship game on the strength of a dominant defense and head coach Kyle Shanahan’s brilliant play calling.
Martin Mayhew helped bring in players such as All-Pro tight end George Kittle, defensive end Nick Bosa, linebacker Fred Warner, and cornerback Richard Sheran in recent years. Looking at the positive results the ‘Niners’ have had signing free agents and drafting players, it’s tempting to pouch of some of those that played a role in the team’s success.
Nevertheless, general manager John Lynch should get more of the praise. Mayhew will likely garner some interest in the next hiring cycle, but should teams should dig deep, and consider his time as the Detroit Lions general manager.
In a span of eight years, Mayhew racked up 47 wins and 81 losses and failed to acquire talented players on a yearly basis. He oversaw the selection of quarterback Matthew Stafford and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh early in his tenure but couldn’t find talented players towards the end.
