Jacksonville Jaguars 2021 draft: Kyle Trask ‘doing a lot of Burrow-like things’
The Jacksonville Jaguars must consider taking Kyle Trask in 2021’s draft.
The Jacksonville Jaguars need a quarterback and the current consensus is that they will take Ohio State’s Justin Fields with the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. However, Florida’s Kyle Trask could make things interesting if he keeps playing the way he has in recent weeks.
Although Trevor Lawrence and Fields are considered to be the best two players in next draft’s quarterback class, Trask is right behind him and could quickly reach the same tier. This season, he’s started seven games and is 174-of-246 for 2,554 yards, 31 touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Trask just helped Florida beat Vanderbilt 38-17 and is on the run for 2021’s Heisman Trophy, but it isn’t just his stats. The Gators quarterback has the physical skills to play the position in the NFL, excellent eye discipline, and knows how to move in the pocket. Moreover, he has experience playing on different formations, which is not a must but is helpful heading into the pros.
Could the Jacksonville Jaguars draft Joe Burrow 2.0?
The Florida signal-caller is having so much success that he’s getting compared to 2020’s first overall draft pick and 2019’s Heisman Trophy winner, Joe Burrow. One NFC scout believes ‘he’s doing a lot of Burrow-like things‘, via draft analyst Matt Miller of Bleacher Report.
After seven games in 2019, Burrow had thrown 29 touchdowns and three interceptions, so the scout’s comparison to the former Ohio State quarterback makes sense at least on paper. The Gators still have four games left on their schedule so Trask can keep posting numbers and increase his draft stock.
It’s not a done deal, but the Jacksonville Jaguars need to scout Trask.
Drafting Trask early in 2021’s draft could look far-fetched now, but if the Jaguars feel he can be their quarterback, they shouldn’t hesitate to draft him. They could trade down and gain more picks in the process, but they would run the risk of seeing other teams jumping in front of them and beating them to the quarterback.
Another option for this Jacksonville team would be to select the Gators quarterback with their second first-round pick, but this selection is projected to be in the 20’s so by the time they’re on the clock, he will likely be gone.
If Trask keeps playing the way he has, he will make it difficult for the Jaguars to pass him up and will give them no choice but to use the second overall pick on him if they don’t want to miss out on him.
