The Jacksonville Jaguars need to refrain from re-signing these players.

This year, the Jacksonville Jaguars decided to take a laid-back attitude towards free agency. Their most meaningful additions were tight end Tyler Eifert, defensive tackle Al Woods and defensive end Rodney Gunter. In the end, none of the signings ended up having a big impact.

Eifert has been adequate but hasn’t been able to get rid of the injury bug. Gunter unexpectedly retired due to health reasons and Woods opted out of the season due to COVID-19 concerns. Meanwhile, the ‘Jags’ parted ways with defensive ends Calais Campbell and Yannick Ngakoue and failed to replenish their defensive line adequately.

If you want to look for reasons why the Jaguars are currently 1-7, their inefficient approach to free agency played a big factor. If they want to get out of the cellar of the AFC South that needs to change.

This Jacksonville team is set to have $83.99 million in cap space in 2021. While they’re going to have the flexibility to add plenty of impact players, they will have to make some decisions regarding some of their own free-agents. Some of these players that are set to hit free agency have been decent, but not worth keeping at a premium rate. Others simply don’t deserve another contract. These five players fall into one category or the other.

5. Mike Glennon, quarterback

This one should be an easy one. Mike Glennon arrive in Jacksonville on a one-year $1.87 million deal and hasn’t done anything of note. The veteran quarterback was supposed to be the main backup in case Gardner Minshew II were to miss any time.

Minshew suffered a thumb injury and has been out since then. At the time, it was telling that head coach Doug Marrone didn’t hesitate to give rookie Jake Luton the starting not instead of Glennon. Looking back, back the decision made sense as North Carolina State product hasn’t shown enough to make a team comfortable handing him the keys to the offense.

Glennon has previously played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Arizona Cardinals, the Chicago Bears, and the Las Vegas Raiders. His tenures with each franchise ended in an unspectacular fashion. It seems like it will be the same with the Jaguars. There’s no point in bringing him back in 2021.
