Jacksonville Jaguars sign Chase McLaughlin to take over kicker duties
The Jacksonville Jaguars were quick to add a kicker with Josh Lambo out.
They say that the sixth time is the charm. At least, that’s what the Jacksonville Jaguars surely hope when it comes to whoever holds kicking duties for them. They have had a revolving door at the kicker position all year long and have signed Chase McLaughin to fill it.
Head coach Dog Marrone told the media in a recent sitdown that the team was going to place Josh Lambo on the Injury Reserve list after injuring his gluteus medius muscle when attempting an onside kick with 1:20 left in the clock in Week 9.
This is the second time in 2020 that the Jaguars will be without Lambo. Whereas the first time was for a four-week stretch, the kicker will be out for the remainder of the season this time around. Players are eligible to return from the Injured Reserve list once this season and since this would be the second time Lambo is placed there, he won’t be able to return.
The Jacksonville Jaguars hope McLaughlin is up to the task.
McLaughlin originally went undrafted in 2019 and signed with the Buffalo Bills. He was waived before the season started and joined the Minnesota Vikings. He was waived again and played games for the Los Angeles Chargers, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Indianapolis Colts last year. He made 18 of 23 field-goal attempts and had a 78.3 completion rate.
The Jaguars are probably hoping the McLaughlin is better than the four kickers they employed while Lambo was absent earlier this year. Together, they nailed five of nine field-goal attempts and went 5-6 on extra points.
Meanwhile, Lambo is 5-5 on field-goal attempts and nailed eight of ten extra points. The kicker signed a four-year contract with the Jaguars in 2019 but doesn’t have any money guaranteed beyond 2020. At this point, it’s unlikely since he has been efficient when he has been on the field, but if the Jaguars decided to part ways with Lambo, they could do so without any salary cap repercussion.
