The Jaguars should stick with Jake Luton in Week 10
Jake Luton was on a mission in his first NFL start for the Jaguars
There weren’t many expectations lying on Jacksonville this week coming off of a Bye week and starting the season at 1-6. But rookie quarterback Jake Luton was determined to make an impact in his NFL debut, and he did just that.
Despite losing 27-25 to the Houston Texans, Luton certainly sparked a cultural change for the Jaguars offense. He kept the offense flowing from beginning to end and did exceptionally well for not having a preseason to prepare and adjust to the speed of the game.
After a batted first pass, Luton threw a perfect pass to D.J. Chark for a 73-yard touchdown. He looked comfortable commanding the offense and had good pocket presence. He sensed pressure within the pocket and rolled out to make safe throwaways instead of forcing bad throws.
Overall, Luton had a great performance except for a few questionable throws. Three of his passes were near-interceptions—one was batted, one was a drop, and the other was a miscommunication between quarterback and wide receiver.
His one and only interception of the game was an overthrown ball. The receiver was running a soft fade route up the left side of the field and Luton needed to place the ball outside of the numbers toward the sideline but instead drove it inside right to a defender.
Jaguars should start Jake Luton in Week 10 at Green Bay
Gardner Minshew‘s injury timeline is a bit of a question currently. Even if he is healthy and ready to go next Sunday at Green Bay, the Jaguars should start Jake Luton again. Why not keep him in until you have a true reason to bench him? Right now, there is no reason to put him on the bench. Luton was comfortable leading the Jaguars offense and they found just the right balance of a passing and rushing gameplan. Minshew needs a bit of a wakeup call anyways.
