Jacksonville Jaguars offense didn’t skip a beat with Jake Luton at the helm
The Jacksonville Jaguars’ passing game was efficient in Week 9.
In the two games that preceded Week 9, the Jacksonville Jaguars offense wasn’t able to muster more than 16 points. That changed last week when the ‘Jags’ put 25 points on the scoreboard with rookie quarterback Jake Luton leading the way.
Even though the Jaguars lost their seventh contest of the 2020 season, their offense kept them in the game until the very last moment. Making his first start ever, Luton was 26-of-38 for 304 yards, one passing touchdown one rushing touchdown and one interception.
Although the Oregon State standout would like some of his throws back, he was efficient for the most part and had no problem distributing the ball. All in all, eight different Jaguars caught at least one pass and four hauled in at least four receptions with wide receiver D.J. Chark leading the team with seven.
We wouldn’t have been surprised if Luton had falter. After all we didn’t know how he would fare against the Texans defense. However, he quickly put any questions down when he found Chark for a 73-yard touchdown. It didn’t matter that wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. left the game with a hamstring injury either, as Chris Conley stepped up in his absence.
Chark ended the game with seven receptions for 147 yards and a touchdown while Conley hauled in seven passes for 52 yards. Moreover, tight end Tyler Eifert caught four receptions for 48 yards after missing the team’s Week 7 game againt the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Jacksonville Jaguars’ running back also did its part.
The running game was equally efficient. Rookie running back James Robinson racked up 25 carries for 99 yards and the team as a wholed amassed 27 carries for 115 yards and two touchdowns, one by Luton and one by the Illinois State standout.
If there is one area on offense the Jaguars’ coaching staff needs to work on is their third and fourth-down efficiency. Aganst the Texans, they were 6-4 on third downs and went 0-1 on fourth. If the Jags can fix this area, they will have an efficient offense moving forward.
