Jacksonville Jaguars QB Jake Luton showed he belongs
The Jacksonville Jaguars should do just fine with Luton at the helm.
Heading into Week 9, we were looking forward to seeing how the Jacksonville Jaguars would perform with rookie quarterback Jake Luton at the helm. Even though the team lost its seven straight game of the season, the Oregon Standout didn’t disappoint in this first NFL start.
Jaguars’ head coach Doug Marrone said during the week that he wasn’t sure how Luton was going to perform. After all, it’s one thing to go against the scout team and another to take the field knowing that there are actual stakes at play.
How did QB Jake Luton perform for the Jacksonville Jaguars?
Luton was solid in his debut. He made some mistakes but was also responsible for some electrifying plays. After getting his first pass ever deflected, his second one was a 73-yard completion to wide receiver D.J. Chark Jr. The first-year quarterback made use of his arm, took some shots downfield, and averaged 8.0 per attempt against the Houston Texans.
Not everything was perfect though. Early in the game, Luton threw a pass that could’ve been intercepted but was dropped. Later in the third quarter, the rookie threw a pass to tight end James O’Shaughnessy that Texans cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III intercepted.
On the other hand, Luton moved the ball well and even led a comeback drive in the fourth quarter down 27-19 that he ended with a 13-yard touchdown run. Even though he failed the two-point conversion attempt to tie the game, he showed he could keep up with the Texans. The Jaguars quarterback finished the game with 26 completions for 304 yards, one passing touchdown, one rushing touchdown, and one interception.

Doug Marrone talked about Luton’s performance with the local media after the game and said he was impressed with a lot of things the quarterback did. He praised him for keeping his eyes on the field and pointed out that he played under duress. The head coach also mentioned that he wasn’t responsible for any delay-of-game penalties.
Later in the sitdown, Marrone said Gardner Minshew isn’t throwing yet, so there’s no decision to make regarding the quarterback position and Luton will get the starting nod once again. After looking at how the rookie quarterback played in Week 9, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
