We might’ve seen the last of Jacksonville Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew.

Who didn’t get hyped up last year when Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew II took the field? After all, nobody expected the scrappy signal-caller out of Washington State to take the field and thrive with Nick Foles firmly entrenched at the position before the 2019 season.

All in all, Minshew played in 12 games, won six of them, and completed 176 passes for 3,271 for 21 touchdowns and six interceptions in the process. He then entered the 2020 season as the unquestionable started and in prime position to show he was the franchise quarterback this Jacksonville organization has looked for but hasn’t had.

Alas, Minshew’s play took a dive and so did the Jaguars’ record in the standings. Even though the sophomore isn’t solely at fault, the ‘Jags’ currently hold a 1-6 record, and to aggravate matters, he is now out with a thumb injury.

Rookie Jake Luton will get the starting nod against the Houston Texans in Week 9 and as long as Minshew is out. However, there’s no guarantee Minshew will get his job back once he’s healthy according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN.

The Jacksonville Jaguars may put an end to Minshew Mania if Luton thrives.

Minshew not getting his job back is heavily contingent on how Luton performs. If the rookie fails to distinguish himself on the football field and ends up faltering, the sophomore may get the quarterback job back. On the other hand, if the Oregon State standout thrives at the helm, it won’t make much sense for the Jaguars to get him off the field.

The reasoning behind that is simple. Even before Minshew sustained the thumb injury, he was struggling. The team lost six straight games with him at the helm, and although not all was his fault, he didn’t show enough to make the team think they had a keeper in him.

Had Minshew played better before his injury, he would get the starting quarterback without trouble. Nevertheless, that wasn’t the case and he will have to watch from the bench if Luton is having success. Although it may hurt Minshew to watch from the sidelines, it will mean the Jaguars are playing well with Luton at the helm.
