Jacksonville Jaguars decision to go with QB Jake Luton makes sense
The Jacksonville Jaguars’ decision to go with Jake Luton is the right one.
Earlier this week, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone said that rookie quarterback Jake Luton would get starting reps ahead of their Week 9 matchup against the Houston Texans. This decision to with the Oregon State standout instead of veteran Mike Glennon makes sense.
The coaching staff knows Glennon has a limited ceiling and looking at his track record on the field, they might’ve been less than thrilled to give him the keys to the offense. On the other hand, Luton has been solid in practices and could keep the offense going.
Jacksonville Jaguars HC Doug Marrone went over the team’s decision.
On Wednesday’s sitdown with the press, Marrone went over his decision to start Luton against the Texans. The coach says that the quarterback ‘doesn’t act like a rookie’ and added that coming out of Oregon State, he ‘just came in and went to work’ and ‘went about things professionally’.
On the other hand, Marrone didn’t try to overhype things and was straightforward about his assessment of Luton. He said that the quarterback’s reps weren’t ‘over-the-top’, but were good enough. Also, the head coach that ultimately, the team doesn’t know now how the rookie will fare in action because it’s one thing to go get reps in practice and another to face coverages and pressure on game day.
Marrone cited Luton’s ability to pick up the system, his physical ability, and his intellect as reasons to go with him. It doesn’t hurt that Luton had a successful career at Oregon State. As the Beavers quarterback in 2019, Luton completed 222 of 358 passes for 2,714 yards 28 touchdowns, and just three interceptions.
The Jaguars know Luton gives them the best chance to beat the Texans. They currently hold a 1-6 record and they don’t have anything to lose. It might not seem like it, but this Jacksonville team hasn’t given up yet and is still trying to win some football games. Their decision to go with Luton over Glennon proves it.
