There are many reasons why the Jacksonville Jaguars defense is struggling.

There’s no way to sugarcoat this, the Jacksonville Jaguars defense has been left much to be desired in 2020. While we didn’t envision it to be a top-echelon unit, we didn’t expect it to be that much of a liability either. They currently rank 28th in points allowed with 220 and 30th in total yards with 2,971.

This season, the ‘Jags’ have surrendered more than 30 points in all games but one, the season opener against the Indianapolis Colts. In that matchup, they allowed ‘just’ 20 points. Coincidentally, that’s been the only game the team has won this season.

Although there have been some bright spots here and there, the Jaguars haven’t gotten much from their core players on defense. Lineback Myles Jack missed has missed two games due to injuries this season and hasn’t been made much of a difference when he’s been on the field.

Cornerback C.J. Henderson has also been solid, but he has had to deal with the growing pains that come with being a rookie in the NFL. Other than him, the Jaguars secondary’s performance has been less than optimal this season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars need Josh Allen to play like he did last season.

Another Jaguars defensive player that has struggled in 2020 is defensive end Josh Allen. Putting aside the fact he’s missed two games this season, the sophomore hasn’t had the impact he had in 2019. In his rookie campaign, the Kentucky standout recorded 10.5 sacks, 44 total tackles and two forced fumbles. Meanwhile, he’s had two sacks and seven total tackles this season. He’s simply not performing like the player that received a Pro Bowl designation in 2019.

Allen isn’t the sole reason why the Jaguars defense is struggling, but the team needs to get better production out of him. If he hasnt fully recovered from the knee injury he sustained early in the season, the team’s Bye Week could provide him ample rest ahead of their Week 9 matchup against the Houston Texans.
