Where do Leonard Fournette and the other Jacksonville Jaguars running backs rank in the AFC South?

It might be considered sacrilegious to agree with anyone who covers the Tennessee Titans, but Brady Akins of Titan Sized gets it right. The Jacksonville Jaguars have the second-best running back in the AFC South this season.

Leonard Fournette had by far his best season as a professional in 2019, but it does not compare to the success of Titans’ running back Derrick Henry. Fournette, who is in the final season of his rookie deal, does not figure to be back in a Black and Teal uniform next season, which means this year could prove to be his best yet and one where he challenges Henry for AFC South supremacy.

"“After what must have been a real rollercoaster ride for Jaguars fans in regards to their team’s plans with Leonard Fournette, it seems as though the team has settled on keeping their 2017 first-round pick on the roster,” Atkins writes.More from Jacksonville Jaguars NewsJacksonville Jaguars should welcome Derrick Henry into the kingdomJaguars Rumors: Trent Baalke seems to be getting respect nowJaguars News: This division rival might be making a big moveFormer Jacksonville Jaguars S Johnathan Cyprien: “New Profession, Same Standards”Jacksonville Jaguars TE Evan Engram officially gets the franchise tag: 3 takeaways“And for as talent-starved as Jacksonville is on the offensive side of the ball, it’s probably in their best interest that they kept Fournette around. With apologies to the Ryquell Armstead truthers of the world, the Jaguars running back group is essentially a one-man show.”"

The general consensus is Fournette would need to have an “all-world” season for the Jaguars front office to consider offering him a new deal moving forward. This could be a situation where the franchise would still look to trade him before his contract expires in March of 2021.

Fournette has played well in two of the three seasons he has been in Jacksonville, helping the team reach the AFC title game in 2017 before injuries and questions about his commitment to the organization led to a dismal 2018 campaign. A rededicated Fournette came back in great shape in 2019, and also caught 76 passes to lead the team.

It‘s just Fournette who is under the microscope this coming season, but the entire Jaguars running back run which ranked 16th in the NFL last season.

"“Possibly the biggest knock on the Jaguars running back group was how rarely they were able to find the endzone,” Atkins wrote."

The Jacksonville Jaguars must find the end zone more in 2020. They score just three times – which was the lowest in the NFL last season.

Jacksonville added Chris Thompson in free agency from Washington. The former FSU back is familiar with the offensive game plan run by Jay Gruden, who is now the offensive coordinator of the Jaguars. Because of the workload, the Jaguars gave Fournette last season, the veteran Thompson figures to make things a bit easier for his teammate moving forward.

"“But what Fournette lacked in scoring ability he made up for with how much he moved the ball,” added Atkins. “Jacksonville might not have the depth of the Colts running back group, but they do have a player more proven than Jonathan Taylor or Marlon Mack.”"
