Just two weeks removed from being the first-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars are defensive end Josh Allen has been named to the All-Rookie team.

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie pass rusher Josh Allen hasn’t played a down in the NFL and he is already receiving accolades before the season starts. Allen, the seventh pick in the Draft out of Kentucky has been named to the All-Rookie Team by NFL.com.

Josh Allen was one of the bigger surprises of the first round. Not because he joins a solid defense in Jacksonville, which should make the pass rusher even better, but because he was considered a top talent that fell to Jacksonville. The 6-foot-5, 262-pounder is listed as an edge rusher and linebacker for the Jaguars, who could use him in multiple situations this season.

As a fan, I am salivating over the idea of Allen’s speed and agility coming off one side of the defensive line with Yannick Ngakoue coming from the other side to meet at the quarterback. The Jaguars have one of the better pass-rushing combinations in the NFL with Calais Campbell as the leader of this defense.

Josh Allen, if he lives up to his billing, will make this front seven even better.

According to Chad Reuter, Allen was picked for the All-Rookie team as a linebacker, a position he wasn’t initially drafted for with Jacksonville. The Jaguars have a solid starting cast on the defensive front but do need depth on the outside. The same could be said of from the linebacker position. There is not a lot to go on after Myles Jack and Telvin Smith.

"“Allen is not just an effective outside rusher — he’s a complete player who solidifies the second level of Jacksonville’s defense. Watch out if he picks up more pass-rush moves,” Reuter explains."

Following his selection, the Jaguars front office told the local media they were surprised he was available when the team was on the clock. The general consensus was the Jaguars would take the best player available when they were ready to make a selection. Faced with the top defensive end, tight end (T.J. Hockenson) and right tackle (Jawaan Taylor) still on the board, it became apparent that Allen’s talent was too good to pass up.

The Jaguars landed Taylor with their second-round pick after moving up to grab him in a trade with Oakland.

"“That is the way the draft goes. Josh Allen was very high on everyone’s board,” said Tom Coughlin, Vice-President of Football Operations for the Jaguars after the pick.
