The Jacksonville Jaguars, per sources, will sign Nick Foles on the opening day of free agency. The move will end the relationship between the team and quarterback Blake Bortles.

It looks as though the Jacksonville Jaguars have a new quarterback. According to several websites, former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles will sign with the team when free agency officially starts on March 13. Foles, who has been linked to the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants, could give the franchise stability at a position that was severally ineffective last season.

The move to sign Foles would also reunite him with former Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DiFilippo, who became Jacksonville’s offensive coordinator this offseason.

"According to Charean Williams of profootballtalk.com, “Les Bowen of philly.com reports (subscription) a market for Foles “outside of Jacksonville has not developed” and the Jaguars “absolutely expect” to sign the former Super Bowl MVP when free agency opens March 13.”"

The news of the impending free agent move became a big topic of conversation on Sunday after the NFL Combine. As a side note, please understand this is still speculation. Nothing can be finalized as complete until NFL Free Agency begins.

"Williams added that, “Foles, 30, went 4-1 in the postseason the past two seasons and 6-2 in the regular season in place of Carson Wentz the past two seasons.”"

The Jaguars are believed to be a team that is still a viable playoff contender if it were to acquire a veteran signal caller. Injuries were a major part of the team’s 5-11 disaster in 2018, but the ineffective play at quarterback was also a highlight (or lowlight) of the season. When the Jaguars announced that DiFilippo would be the team’s new offensive coordinator, the talk of Foles joining the Jaguars continuing to gain more steam.

"“With the Jaguars as the only bidder, Foles might not get a contract that makes him among the highest-paid at his position, according to Bowen,” Williams added."

The news of the Jaguars wanting to sign Foles is not news. How this is such a public story is rather interesting. The team’s front office keeps most of its free agent news close to the vest and lets little information out before the process.

Both general manager David Caldwell and head coach Doug Marrone talked last week about needing more consistency from the quarterback position.

Caldwell admitted that Blake Bortles is still “in the mix” when the organization looks at who would be best to lead this team on the field. A move to release Bortles comes with a price. He will cost the team $16.5 million in dead cap space.

Next. The Jaguars must get help at running back this offseason. dark

The Jaguars have other needs on offense as well which include depth on the offensive, especially at right guard and tackle. The team will also need to replace at least one running back and help at tight end.
