The Jacksonville Jaguars 2018 season began with a huge free agent signing.  The Jaguars picked up the best offensive guard by signing Andrew Norwell.

None of the pundits expected the Jacksonville Jaguars to make a big splash in the 2018 free agent market. However, the Jaguars surprised everyone when they signed Andrew Norwell.  Also the team signed a variety of players to provide depth and to fill areas of need.  Let’s take a look at the new Jaguars.

Offensive line

The Jaguars signed a potential super star in Andrew Norwell.  Norwell was selected first-team All-Pro in 2017.  Jacksonville now has a true All-Pro on the offensive line.  In addition, Norwell is a great run blocker who can create holes for Leonard Fournette, as well as an excellent pass blocker. He is only 26 years old as well.  This is an A+ signing.

Tight end

Tight end is an area of need for the Jaguars.  As a result of this need, the team signed Niles Paul. Paul is a former third string tight end for the Washington Redskins.  Unfortunately Paul is not an exciting find.  However a far more intriguing possibility has entered the building.  Austin Seferian-Jenkins has signed with the team. Seferian-Jenkins began his career as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer but was waived because of a DUI.  He turned his life around and played for the Jets.  The tight end has a huge upside.  Seferian-Jenkins as a rookie looked like a very good prospect with great potential when he played for the Bucs.  In another potential move, free agent Luke Willson visits on Friday.

Wide receiver

Fans were sorry to say goodbye to Allen Robinson.  To fill the void, the Jaguars signed wide receiver Donte Moncrief to a one year deal.  Moncrief played for the Indianapolis Colts.  He had an excellent season in 2015 but was hampered by injuries the past two years. Moncrief has size at 6’ 2’’ and 220 pounds. This is a signing with a potentially large upside.  In addition, the team resigned Marqise Lee.

Defensive back

The Jaguars signed three free agent defensive backs.  First was D.J. Hayden from the Detroit Lions. Another DB was Don Carey, also from the Lions. The final back signed was Cody Davis from the Los Angeles Rams.  Don Carey played for the Jaguars at one time. Aside from Hayden playing as the nickel, these defensive backs are likely to be backups or special teams players.

Comments

The Jaguars surprised many fans with their high level of activity in the free agent market.  They signed a star player in Andrew Norwell.  Equally important the team added two tight ends to the team. Jacksonville added some important role players and special team players.  Moreover, if Donte Moncrief returns to his 2015 form, he makes up to some extent for the loss of Allen Robinson.  Finally, Chad Henne visited the Tennessee Titans on Thursday.  That potentially leaves only one quarterback.  Therefore, expect additional free agent possibilities as well as draft choices at the position.
