What’s Up With All The Injured Jacksonville Jaguars?
By Larry Brake
The Jacksonville Jaguars have completed their OTAs and minicamp. Why are there so many injured players?
The Jacksonville Jaguars are heading into training camp with personnel issues . Several Jaguars defenders were unable to participate in OTAs and minicamp due to being injured. Jalen Ramsey needed surgery to repair a core muscle injury.
A core muscle injury is sometimes reported as a sports hernia per the Vincera Institute. Some core muscle injuries can be treated without surgery. Ramsey needed surgery due to the significance of his injury. In addition, both starting safeties were unable to participate in OTAs and minicamp.
John Oehser of Jaguars.com reports:
"Safeties Tashaun Gipson and Barry Church continued to work on the side, as they did throughout OTAs. Other players not practicing/working on the side Thursday included cornerback Aaron Colvin, running back T.J. Yeldon, tight end Neal Sterling and defensive tackle Stefan Charles. Marrone declined on Friday to speculate on the possible availability of players when training camp opens. …"
Should Jaguars fans be concerned? While it is still June, each player has plenty of time to heal before the season starts in September. Maybe Yeldon is still nursing an ankle injury from the 2016 season.
Which Side Of The Ball Does The Injured Jaguars Affect The Most?
The defense is poised to be better than last years defense because of the free agent signings. In addition, the Jaguars linebacker corps is a very fast, tough and talented group. Consequently, if three of the four starting secondary members are hurting, the defense suffers the most.
Gipson and Church have not practiced with the defense as a unit. Ramsey may miss time in training camp to recover from his surgery. Colvin missed time in 2016 because of suspension from team.
These injuries could impact the early season due to having to play younger players. The Jaguars open the season in Houston. Jacksonville needs to be at full strength to start 2017. The road to the AFC South crown begins in week one and into week two at home against Tennessee. Jacksonville must be 2-0 to start the season.
