Those seven guys listed before are most likely the highest priorities heading into 2017, but there are still some players that fill in the depth. Here is a list of the remaining players due up for their last contractual season in Jacksonville.

  • Alex Ellis – Tight End
  • Luke Bowanko – Center
  • Greg Van Roten – Guard
  • Jeremiah Poutasi -Offensive Tackle
  • Chris Reed – Offensive Tackle
  • Marcus Rush – Defensive Tackle
  • Lerentee McCray – Outside Linebacker

Final Thoughts

Most probably can look at this list and realize that some key playmakers are due up for contracts in 2018. As stated earlier, the true focus concerning the free agents have to be Allen Robinson and Telvin Smith, both easily considered high points to this Jaguars team over the last few seasons.

Following Robinson and Smith, a look at re-signing both offensive linemen should be the next concern.Brandon Linder and Patrick Omameh were the two strongest players along the offensive line. Without these two, Blake Bortles may have seen half a dozen more sacks.

Regarding Bortles’ contract it all comes down to his play this upcoming season. No matter how well he plays I do not believe he should be a bigger priority over Linder, Omameh, Robinson, and Smith. Bortles could succeed quite well in 2017, but he has had too much concern following last year to be sold on his future.

Lastly it comes down to Marqise Lee and Paul Posluszny in regards to the seven highlighted. Lee managed to break out last season and prove his worth as a slot receiver, but depending on his price tag and health he shouldn’t be an instant re-sign. Rashad Greene could sneak into that role following 2017 if he manages to stay healthy this season, this may leave Lee on the outside looking in.

Posluszny also finds himself in a tough spot heading into the new season. As the oldest member of defense he has to maintain his level of play from 2016. The other factor that will come into play will be his asking price, it would be shocking to see him ask for an unreasonable amount as he understands his role with the team as he shifts from stud linebacker to mentor.

There is nearly a year until the contracts will be an issue, but it is never too early to peek into the future. Especially since the 2014 draft class has been one of the biggest successes for a franchise that has struggled to find much to pat themselves on the back for. As for now, the team seems to be on its way to a great season. Just enjoy the season with these players as it may be their last in black and teal.
