Blake Bortles looks awful in loss, time to start worrying

Looking to build off a terrific sophomore campaign, Blake Bortles has been downright bad through three weeks of the 2016 regular season.

After throwing his third interception of the game in the Jacksonville Jaguars 19-17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, quarterback Blake Bortles hung his head and ran off the field and straight into the locker room.

After the game, Bortles shouldered the blame for the loss and the overall struggles of the offense.

So what’s wrong? Well Blake doesn’t really know.

Bortles went into 2016 with the goal of cutting down turnovers while maintaining his penchant for big plays down the field. So far in the first three games, Bortles has looked indecisive and lacked confidence in key situations. Bortles failed to get the Jaguars into position to win the game in the final drive of week 1, but it was somewhat understandable given the completely inane playcall at the end of the game on 4th down.

The situation was quite different on Sunday against the Ravens. The Jacksonville defense was actually playing a solid game, causing a handful of turnovers and giving the offense every chance to close the game out. Whether it was a lack of trust on the coaches part or something else, the Jaguars were distressingly conservative after getting the ball back on turnovers. Settling for slow-developing runs and check downs, the Jaguars couldn’t capitalize on good field position and that falls on Blake somewhat.

Despite all the mistakes made through the first 59 minutes of the game, Blake still had a chance to win the game and he responded by making a boneheaded decision reminiscent of his rookie season – he managed to evade pressure and avoid a sack, only to run into another sack when he had plenty of time to throw the ball away and live to play another down.

Blake Bortles has put up enough good tape to give him more time to work out these problems, but it’s definitely time to start worrying. The hope is that Bortles can thrive under a better coaching staff, and it this point it seems any other staff is probably better.
