Jacksonville Jaguars: Defensive line depth
The Jacksonville Jaguars have had a rough time in recent years applying consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. With new additions from the draft, the Jags defensive line looks to finally have the depth poised for a breakout season.
Looking at the early projections it looks like the Jags will carry ten defensive linemen into the season. A few players to keep an eye on as the season gets underway is Sen’Derrick Marks, Sheldon Day and Yannick Ngakoue.
Sen’Derrick Marks
Returning from injury, Marks looks to build off of a 2014 season when he lead the team in sacks (8.5). With the offseason to get healthy it will be exciting to see his return to the field. Marks will be playing in a reduced role this season, however I believe he can still remain effective on key downs. Marks has the ability of a starter but limiting him will keep him healthy and fresh for the season, adding impressive talent to the depth of the defensive line
Yannick Ngakoue
Ngakoue is the team’s third round selection out of Maryland. As a rookie he will play the defensive end position and looks to compete with Dante Fowler Jr.. Ngakoue’s athleticism makes him a quality player but given time to grow his skill set we should see an increase in productivity. Ngakoue has the potential to come in and be one of the more effective pass rushers for the team. With the season quickly approaching, look for Ngakoue to develop into a potent weapon for Todd Wash and the defense.
Sheldon Day
Day was the Jags fourth round draft pick out of Notre Dame. Day played several different positions at the university making him a unique talent. Recovering from a recent back injury, he looks to regain form for the start of the season. Day will be effective in situational roles early. Adding his talent and relentless motor to the line will only increase the depth at the position.
As the regular season approaches look for the defensive line to build off a down 2015. The Jags mentioned above are just some of the players adding depth to the defensive line this season. As a result of the players, talent, and depth the defensive line looks to be one of the best positions for the team in 2016.
