Jacksonville Jaguars: Demetrius McCray headlines early cuts
By Luke Sims
The Jacksonville Jaguars have begun trimming the fat and one former starter, cornerback Demetrius McCray, finds himself hitting the streets.
Two seasons ago, Demetrius McCray looked like a diamond in the rough. The former seventh round pick worked his way into being a starting cornerback, notching 12 strong starts (and performances) in his belt in 2014.
Just two years later and he’s among the first of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ cuts before the 2016 season. It’s not the way his career trajectory was likely envisioned in 2014.
But the Jaguars are much stronger for it. The secondary features players like Prince Amukamara, Jalen Ramsey, Davon House, and Aaron Colvin at cornerback now. The depth has grown and the fight for a roster spot has become much more competitive.
In addition to McCray, these other players were also waived by the Jags:
- Joplo Bartu, linebacker
- Shaq Evans, wide receiver
- Sam Ficken, place kicker
- Mike Hilton, cornerback
- Cameron Marshall, running back
- Ryan Quigley, punter
- Jamal Robinson, wide receiver
Safety Earl Wolff was waived/injured, offensive lineman Jeff Linkenbach was placed on injured reserve, and offensive lineman Luke Bowanko and defensive end Jonathan Woodard were placed on the physically unable to perform list.
Expect the roster to see a couple more cuts by Tuesday at 4:00pm as the team works to trim down to 53 by September 3rd.
The trimming is good for the Jags as they make sure the fat is stripped away and a leaner, better team is able to compete. The Jags could be competitive for the first time in a long time in 2016 and it looks like the roster is going to be the most loaded yet.
