Jacksonville Jaguars passing attacked poised to get even better
By Daniel Lago
The Jacksonville Jaguars became one of the more explosive offenses in the NFL last season, but they could be even better in 2016.
To most everyone’s surprised, the Jacksonville Jaguars had two of the top producers on offense in the NFL at two positions – quarterback (Blake Bortles) and wide receiver (Allen Robinson). The two players from the 2014 draft class took huge leaps forward in their sophomore seasons and looked like they developed a solid connection.
After breaking franchise records in 2015, Robinson and Bortles are both expected to regress in terms of pure numbers according to most analysts. The reason why isn’t necessarily negative, as many are expecting the Jaguars to have a significantly better defense, meaning the offense won’t need to score as much.
That logic was shaken up a bit during the first two series of the Jaguars first preseason game.
Michael Renner over at Pro Football Focus says the Jaguars passing game is a big winner from week 1 of the preseason:
"2. Jacksonville’s aerial attackLast year definitely wasn’t a fluke for Allen Robinson, and Thursday night’s game showed that he could get even better in year three. He plucked the ball out of the air beautifully on two back-shoulder throws before making a circus diving catch on a deep post. He was the highest-graded receiver from Week 1 of the preseason on only 13 snaps. To make things even better for the Jags, Marqise Lee caught all four of his targets and ended up as the sixth-highest-graded receiver of the week."
Allen Robinson has been a standout player the entire offseason and looks like he’s ready to cement himself as one of the best receivers in the NFL for the foreseeable future.
The pleasant surprise was seeing Marqise Lee show up and make a few solid (and spectacular) receptions. If the team can get anything from the injury-plagued wideout out of USC, this offense is going to be hard to stop.
