The Jacksonville Jaguars take on the New York Jets to open the preseason today, providing an opportunity for players on the bubble to make their case to remain on the team.

The preseason is so much more than just backups beating on each other. It’s about roster health and evaluation and, for a lot of players, the chance to make an impact and finally get on an NFL team roster (or the practice squad for some of them).

It’s like an extension of an audition, finally providing the opportunity for the players on the bubble to show what they can do in game situations.

For the Jacksonville Jaguars, this is especially important. The team is young and hungry and widely expected to make “the leap” in 2016 to either be an 8-8 team or better. Making sure the right pieces are in place is the job of head coach Gus Bradley and general manager Dave Caldwell and both men will finally get a chance to see wha they have tonight.

The New York Jets are no pushover. Finishing the 2015 season at 10-6, the Jets are capable of winning games and continuing to be competitive with some starters missing games. Their quality, reaching through their depth, will give the Jags a good opportunity to measure against another team that is expected to do well in 2016.

We’ll focus on Jags players to watch in this piece. Let’s dive in.
