Jacksonville Jaguars among teams without a Super Bowl trying to shock the world
By Daniel Lago
The Jacksonville Jaguars are one of several teams without a Super Bowl – is this the year they break into the big game?
The Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t done much over the past 3 years to make you think they have any business making the Super Bowl. Head coach Gus Bradley only has 12 wins to his record after his third campaign, with 2015 only showing a marginal improvement (5 wins). Quarterback Blake Bortles improved vastly on a horrific rookie campaign, but he was let down early and often by a putrid defense that allowed opposing teams to get early leads and build on them.
Things appear to be changing in a big way after the Jaguars put together a historically successful offseason. After acquiring three above-average starters on defense in free agency (Malik Jackson, Tashaun Gipson, Prince Amukamara), the team selected arguably the two best defenders in the 2016 NFL Draft (Myles Jack and Jalen Ramsey). The defense is going to be better and there are less and less reasons for the Jaguars to disappoint moving forward.
Adam Schein of NFL.com put the Jaguars 5th on his list of teams without a Super Bowl victory who could shock the world in 2016:
"5) Jacksonville JaguarsI like the Jaguars’ roster — a lot — and this young team certainly could be playoff-bound in 2016. Jacksonville had a fantastic offseason, vastly improving via free agency (see: Malik Jackson, Prince Amukamara, Tashaun Gipson, Chris Ivory) and the draft (Jalen Ramsey and Myles Jack). You just hope those two rookie defenders can enjoy good health.Blake Bortles is ready to break out. Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns are legit weapons at receiver. The defense has plenty of talent.Lot of pressure on Gus Bradley to put it together."
In reality, there’s probably only two legitimate candidates among the teams without a Super Bowl to win it all this year – the Arizona Cardinals and the Carolina Panthers. The rest of the teams (Texans, Bengals, Jaguars, Vikings) would probably need some huge breaks to go their way to actually make it to the final game of the year. The AFC still boasts two juggernauts in the Steelers and Patriots and the NFC path still includes the Seahawks and Packers.
Still… why not the Jaguars?
