Jacksonville Jaguars 2016 NFL Draft: 5 3rd round options
By Luke Sims
The 2016 NFL Draft has the first round in the books but with rounds two and three coming quickly this evening, it’s worth look ahead to who the Jacksonville Jaguars may select.
While the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft still hasn’t happened, it’s never too early to project ahead and what could happen for the third round. The picks will be flying quickly by that point and there will be no guarantees on availability, but there are more than enough options to make reasonable extrapolations.
The Jacksonville Jaguars will be selecting 69th overall in the third round (sixth in the round’s order). It’s a position at the top of the round and should enable them to land a player they want and can utilize immediately.
Expect shifts to the round two and round three draft order before the Jaguars get a chance to pick. There is expected to be movement and teams will jostle for position to land the best leftovers in a draft crowded with talent.
Keep in mind that some of these picks may be selected before the Jags get on the clock in the third round. There were plenty of earlier surprises from other teams in round one and there will be plenty of people reaching into third round projections depending on their individual grades of players.
Let’s jump in.
1) Max Tuerk, C, USC
It’s tough to go into round three and think the Jacksonville Jaguars will draft offense, but it’s certainly possible.
The Jaguars need someone who can man center and also play along the offensive line if needed. Linemen injuries happen too frequently to pass on someone with the ability to step in and play multiple position. Max Tuerk can do exactly that, providing a bit of a renaissance man for the Jaguars.
Tuerk has started along the offensive line through college and has seen success all over. He may not be a true center, especially with his long, lanky frame, but he offers great movement and athleticism to the offensive line as a whole, which is also a need for the Jags.
It will be interesting to see just who ends up drafting Tuerk (even if it isn’t the Jags) because he’s a bit of an odd fit that may be difficult to peg down. The third round isn’t too early to think about depth, but teams may opt for someone who fits one position better. I think he could have a future with the Jaguars, especially after the team was exposed so frequently in 2015 due to a lack of talent across the line.
Eric Robinson highlights what must be done if Tuerk wants to be effective after being drafted, saying, “While his tape shows a linemen with plenty of ability, it is absolutely vital that Tuerk applies some bulk in order for him to be a complete asset to a team.”
