Jacksonville Jaguars Rookie Mini-Camp Features High-Profile Draft Picks, Workout Players
By Daniel Lago
The Jacksonville Jaguars are hosting their annual rookie mini-camp this weekend, and it’s exciting just because it’s the first time fans get to see the new draft picks in action. Fans can still register on the official Jacksonville Jaguars website here.
"The Jaguars Rookie Minicamp will take place on Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9 at the Florida Blue Health & Wellness Practice Fields at EverBank Field at 1:10 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. both days."
The event won’t have quite the excitement it did last year, if only because the Jaguars’ first round pick last year happened to be quarterback Blake Bortles, but it should still be fun to see some of the new guys suit up.
Lineman generally don’t shine too much in the non-contact drills prevalent in rookie mini-camp, so most eyes will be on some of the skill position players.
T.J. Yeldon will be one of the focal points, as he’s expected to come in and probably start right away at running back. He’s used to carrying the load, as he did in Alabama for most of his career, so it shouldn’t be too big of a transition to start working in Jacksonville’s hybrid zone/power blocking scheme.
Rashad Greene was considered one of the steals in draft in the 5th round, and his addition likely means the impending departure of former fourth round pick Ace Sanders. A disappointment after a promising rookie year, Sanders hasn’t really developed into the dynamic slot receiver and return specialist the Jaguars were hoping he could become. Greene was Jameis Winston’s go-to guy in the middle of the field at Florida State, and he should push for playing time in a very young receiving corp.
The other guy I’ll be looking forward to seeing is 4th round pick James Sample. Most analysts aren’t sure if Sample will play strong or free safety, and even Sample didn’t know until recently that he’d be competing at free safety:
We’ve discussed James Sample a bit already on the site, and all signs point to him having the skills to be an effective free safety.
If you’re at mini-camp this weekend, feel free to share pics, videos, anything you’d like!
