Can Blake Bortles Build on Past Success Against Colts?
By Luke Sims
The Blake Bortles officially began after halftime in week three against the Indianapolis Colts. The rookie quarterback was inserted into the lineup after Chad Henne failed to lead the Jaguars on successful drives, four of which were three and outs and one of which ended in a fumble.
Bortles’ 223 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions against the Colts in just one half of football easily put him on pace to have his best game as a pro so far. It was his fifth most productive game (of eight) yardage-wise and he only played for one half. Eating up garbage-time yards for that whole half helps as well.
Bortles knows he can move the ball on the Colts, but can he replicate that success?
So far the young quarterback only has one 300 yard passing game and he continues to turn the ball over frequently, though has limited that in recent games to just one interception per contest. If he can continue to control the ball better and still find success moving the ball through the air, then he has a good shot of showing that his one half against the Colts earlier this year wasn’t just a fluke.
He could also make the Indianapolis Colts/Jacksonville Jaguars rivalry relevant for the first time in years.
The big differences between this coming game and the game in week three is the experience Bortles has amassed in his seven starts and the running game that has developed behind Denard Robinson.
Robinson and Bortles will both likely find themselves far more productive agains the Colts than they were in week three and, hopefully, that will turn into more than 17 points like they scored in week three.
The Jags and Blake Bortles have a real shot to find success on Sunday. So, can Bortles replicate what he started in week three? I think so.
The question becomes, can the defense limit the Colts to under 44 points this time around?
