Jacksonville Jaguars Probably Not In the Trade Market
By Daniel Lago
The NFL is different from the other professional sports leagues in the United States in respect to the prevalence of trades. While trades are almost guaranteed during the NFL Draft in May, they are almost non-existent during the season, especially when it involves active players.
Consequently, it would be shocking to see Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell involved in any trades leading up to the trade deadline on Tuesday October 28. Caldwell is in the middle of his second season as the GM, and he’s done nothing to indicate he would be willing to give up draft picks for another player, especially on a team that probably isn’t seriously competing for another year.
Let’s ignore all of that logic for a second and entertain a trade proposed by Ryan Disdier over at NFL Spin Zone.
"Proposed trade: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers trade wide receiver Vincent Jackson to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a third round draft pickThe Tampa Bay Buccaneers love Vincent Jackson, but are open to dealing him. Tampa Bay is reportedly receiving “tons of calls” regarding Jackson, and if the price is right, a team will likely make trade for the talented wide receiver. A dark horse candidate to land Jackson is none other than the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jackson would help the Jacksonville offense immediately, as he would prove to be invaluable in Blake Bortles’ development. On such a young offense, a veteran presence would help a lot. Allen Robinson, Marqise Lee and Cecil Shorts would also benefit from this deal. Plus, the marketing practically writes itself. “Vincent Jackson-ville!”"
Now the title of the article is “Dream NFL trades that likely won’t happen,” but I don’t understand this trade from either side. If anything, the Jaguars have a logjam at receiver right now with two draft picks (Allen Robinson and Marqise Lee), an undrafted free agent who has flashed (Allen Hurns), an established veteran who needs to prove he deserves an extension (Cecil Shorts), and a kick-returner/slot receiver (Ace Sanders). Why would you take playing time away from any of those young guys who need to develop with Bortles?
It’s a fun exercise, but there really aren’t too many proposed trades out there that make sense for the Jaguars.
