Jacksonville Jaguars Grade: A- for Week 7
By Luke Sims
Us NFL fans love to quantify things when possible (which is pretty much everything) and a frequent way we jumble it all together is through game grades. We love report cards (which is ironic because I hated report card day as a kid). One of the graders I most enjoy reading is Michael Schottey at Bleacher Report. The Jacksonville Jaguars grade for week seven? An A-.
That’s leaps and bounds better than the Jaguars have been averaging all season. Most of us would probably give them a D for week one and an F for weeks two through four and a D+ for the following weeks until this weeks’ victory over the Cleveland Browns. Schottey has the Jaguars with an average of a D+ for the season.
Here’s what Schottey had to say on his Jacksonville Jaguars grade:
"Game Ball: Denard Robinson, Running BackGame Goat: Blake Bortles, QuarterbackThough I had my doubts before the draft whether or not he was truly the top QB in the class (was and still am a Teddy Bridgewater fan), I’ve been a proponent of Bortles for some time. I think the Jaguars would be better right now if Bortles had started and gotten starters reps from Day 1. As it is, though the team picked up its first win against the Browns, it was in spite of Bortles and not due to his play.Robinson had himself a phenomenal day, both pacing the Jaguars offense and providing explosive plays. He finished with 127 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries."
As much as I appreciate the A- that Schottey has given out to the Jaguars, I’m not certain the team as a whole deserves it. The defense was incredibly solid and Denard Robinson ripped it up, but those are only portions of an overall team. The passing game was particularly poor this game and while there wasn’t a whole lot of mediocrity anywhere for the Jaguars, that passing game really dragged the team down. With a much better air attack and some better drives overall the the Jaguars would have run away with this one well before the final turnovers. The coaching could improve as well.
Personally, I believe the Jacksonville Jaguars grade should be closer to a B. It was an heroic effort, but it was far from perfect.
