The Jacksonville Jaguars cut their roster down to 75 on the 24th, removing 14 players who were primarily a long shot to make the team. Here is the full list:

  • CB Mike Harris
  • WR Ramses Barden
  • LB Allen Bradford
  • G Antoine Caldwell
  • LB Josh Hull
  • RB Harvey Unga
  • S Joe Young
  • C Patrick Lewis
  • DT David Carter
  • LS Charley Hughlett
  • WR Kenny Shaw
  • DB Deion Belue
  • WR Lamaar Thomas
  • RB Terrance Cobb

The most significant of these insignificant cuts is cornerback Mike Harris, who played in 31 games over the last two seasons, starting eight of them. Most of his playing time was in 2012, where he accumulated a sack, one interception, six passes defensed, and was in on 55 tackles. He saw a significant reduction in his time on field during Gus Bradley’s first year as head coach and was a relatively solid nickel corner for the team. Bradley is likely moving past Harris (selected in the sixth round of the 2012 draft under then-GM Gene Smith) for players who better fit his scheme. GM Dave Caldwell and coach Bradley has been removing players from the previous era and now only six Smith picks remain with the Jaguars. For more analysis, check out Mike DiRocco’s piece, here. Personally, I liked Harris’s play, but I understand that the Jaguars are looking for a different physical set from their defensive secondary. Based on his diminished role in 2013, it seemed inevitable that the Jaguars would move past Harris at some point this year as he is a role player at best. I wish him the best wherever he ends up.
