Training Camp 2013 – Day 5
By Daniel Lago
After a day off on Tuesday, the Jacksonville Jaguars resumed training camp with full pads on Wednesday. All eyes were on quarterback Blaine Gabbert after he left Monday’s practice on a cart with his ankle taped up. Gabbert walked out onto the field in full gear ready to practice, but he had his ankle taped up pretty thoroughly. The coaches were clearly being cautious with Gabbert as he did not participate fully in all the drills.
As a result, Chad Henne ended up with a majority of the reps on team drills with Mike Kafka taking over some of the snaps with the twos.
Gabbert wasn’t completely held out of practice however as he participated in 7-on-7 drills and made a few nice plays.
Offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch decided to open up the playbook today and gave Denard Robinson plenty of looks in the wildcat and in read-option runs. The offense also ran a neat trick play where Kafka tossed a lateral to converted wide receiver Mike Brown who then threw a deep ball to Jordan Todman.
Shorts had a rare mistake mishandling the exchange on a reverse but overall he continues to have an outstanding training camp.
Alfie Crow of Big Cat Country also provided some great play-by-play on the lineman during some of the drills. From the looks of it Joeckel is as good as advertised and rookie T.J. Barnes looks to have some potential to go along with his massive 6-7, 364 pound frame.
With the players finally practicing in full pads, we should start seeing more reports about the lineman and other players who mostly shine in contact drills. We also could see Justin Blackmon return to action relatively soon.
