Jaguars QB Competition: Don’t Rush The Process

Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne, Matt Scott, and Jordan Rodgers all have an “equal” chance of showing why they should be the starter.  Gabbert and Henne figure to be the favorites, but there is always that possibility that Scott or Rodgers outplay the two veterans and find themselves taking snaps.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.

There is nothing more exciting in the offseason than an unsettled quarterback position.  You can root for a player to make a jump up and start, you can root for a player to suddenly fulfill his potential (looking at you, Gabbert), or you can root for the team to just tank and “suck for ____.”  No matter what, an unsettled quarterback position brings in attention.

While we’re all eager to see how it turns out, we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves.  Gabbert and Henne are likely the front runners through the offseason.  They are defending their status as #1 and #2 of the team throughout the offseason, but it is unlikely that Rodgers or Scott can unseat them.  Would we all be pleased to see it?  More than likely.  Will it happen?  Don’t hold your breath.

Senior Jaguars.com writer may have the best advice about the entire thing saying, “OTAs are part of the process, and we should have an idea of where each player stands – and their comfort level in Offensive Coordinator Jedd Fisch’s scheme…”  He advises waiting until mid June to see who is going to get the nod.  I say it may take longer than that.  Hopefully we aren’t having surprise QB cuts the day before the season starts, but it may still be an unsettled position for a longer period than even mid June.

Bring on the quarterback competition!  It’s always exciting, but let’s be patient as we watch it all unravel.
