Paul Kuharsky of ESPN’s AFC South Blog has some insight into how the Jacksonville Jaguars are currently viewing their number two overall pick. In an interview he did with Steve Muench of Scouts Inc, Muench made his opinion known that he believes the Jaguars are likely to go with a pass rusher at number two overall and that pass rusher is either going to be Ezekiel Ansah, Barkevious Mingo, or Dion Jordan. Muench gave the edge to Ansah in that situation.
It’s good to hear that the edge rusher is gaining favor again for the Jaguars at number two overall, but then again I’m not sold on Geno Smith as “the guy.” Muench also seemed hesitant to say that Smith would be the guy, calling him the “Wildcard” at number two overall.
The biggest part of Kuharsky’s article, however, centers on how the Jaguars know who they want at number two overall. The title of his piece is “Jags Eye 2 Players for No. 2 Pick” but there isn’t much elaboration as to who they are. Preferably, the Jaguars trade back for more picks that can contribute immediately. But has GM Dave Caldwell found players that he likes and wants to use the second overall pick on? Here’s what Caldwell had to say:
"There is a player there at two that we’re going to draft and that’s going to make us better, we feel good about that, and we have a consensus here from our personnel staff and our coaching staff."
Caldwell then goes on to say that it would have to be the right situation for the Jaguars to move past that player in a trade back.
There aren’t a whole lot of clues as to who the Jaguars will be drafting, but if I had to guess I would say that they are leaning toward Ansah, Jordan, Mingo, tackles Eric Fisher and Luke Joeckel, and QB Geno Smith.
