…a quarterback.
It may come as no surprise to us Jacksonville Jaguars fans now, but Fansided.com’s weekly mock draft has, once again, given the Jaguars West Virginia’s Geno Smith with the second overall pick. This comes on the heels of the release of defensive tackle C.J. Mosley, which may mean that the Jags go after another defensive tackle early in the draft.
Smith has gotten a lot of attention, as good quarterbacks should, and seems to be the flavor of the draft for the Jags.
Here is what writer Josh Hill had to say about the pick:
"This one has been waiting to be mocked, so I’ll be the sucker who does it. Jacksonville needs an edge rusher, and the top of the draft is the best place to have their pick of the litter, so to speak. But the team essentially sent the entire state of Florida to Geno Smith’s Pro Day, and not only does that signal serious interest but Smith impressed everyone with his workout. The Jaguars have shown increasingly little confidence in Blaine Gabbert, and it would come as no surprise if management finally moved on from Gabbert and went in the direction of the more mobile Smith."
I don’t think it’s true at all that the Jags have “shown increasingly little confidence in Blaine Gabbert” but if that’s his perspective, then that’s his perspective. It’s been said time and time again that if the Jaguars are really in love with Smith then they should take him. But are they really in love with him? Sending the entire state of Florida to his Pro Day was big, but was it more than just a publicity stunt.
We’ll know as April and the NFL Draft rolls around.
