Fansided.com’s weekly mock draft has come out again and, surprise, surprise, the Jacksonville Jaguars are going with a pass rusher. And, surprise, surprise, it’s Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State.
The frequently-mocked defensive end has been falling on some draft boards since the NFL Scouting Combine because he did not perform as well as more athletic pass rushers Barkevious Mingo of Louisiana State University and Dion Jordan of Oregon. While Werner could still very well be the pick for the Jaguars at number two overall, it would have to be a tough decision by GM Dave Caldwell, who has the opportunity to pick Werner based on how well of a pro he will transition into or pick a more raw athletic talent.
In analyzing the pick, writer Josh Hill writes:
"The Jaguars are under new leadership from top to bottom but don’t think that means they’re going to take a quarterback. The Jaguars need a pass rusher to come off the edge and get pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Werner is hands down the best edge rusher in this years class and he’s quickly risen to the top of the draft. Werner is discussion for the No. 1 pick, so Jacksonville’s getting a stud in the former Seminole."
While I think that Werner is probably not the hands-down best pass rusher in the draft (really, the field is pretty competitive) he may be the “safest” pick at second overall – if there really are any safe picks for the Jags this early in such a tight draft.
