Jaguars expected to be ‘competitive’ for A.J. Bouye

The Jacksonville Jaguars have some serious cap space to work with, and they are reportedly aiming their sights at one of the top free agents available – A.J. Bouye.
The tampering period for free agency has begun, which means the Jacksonville Jaguars are actively looking to spend the $70+ million in cap space they have burning a hole in their pocket.
Unsurprisngly, the Jaguars have been linked to numerous high-end free agents, including perhaps the top defender on the market – Houston Texans cornerback A.J. Bouye.
Aaron Wilson, a reporter for the Houston Chronicle who… chronicles the Houston Texans, reported that the Jaguars are among the many teams vying for Bouye’s services.
That’s the entire AFC South and two teams with oodles of cap space as well.
As Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union notes, Bouye is the top target for the Jaguars (along with Calais Campbell).
"The Jaguars, armed with nearly $76 million in salary cap space, were expected to be one of the most active teams on the market because of their available money and their pressing needs. The Jaguars’ top targets are believed to be Houston cornerback A.J. Bouye and Arizona defensive end Calais Campbell, which makes sense because the Jaguars require a No. 1A/2 cornerback to play opposite Jalen Ramsey and a strong-side defensive end to replace the released Jared Odrick."
While no one can officially sign until Thursday, we will likely know well before then if the Jaguars have locked up Bouye or anyone else. Teams and players can’t technically agree to terms, but there’s a lot of wink-wink contracts being handed out as we speak.
Bouye would be a tremendous addition for the Jaguars, as the ascending defensive back would give the Jaguars arguably the best corner duo in the entire league. Jalen Ramsey cemented himself as a lockdown corner as a rookie, but the team clearly wasn’t satisfied with Prince Amukamara as his number 2. Bouye would give the Jaguars a lot of scheme flexibility in terms of blitzing if they could rely on their defensive backs to effectively cover.
We’ll know fairly soon if this pipedream could become a reality.
