Should Jaguars Fans Pull for the Giants Because of the Coughlin Connection?

Before I get to the Tom Coughlin connection, I’d like to first introduce myself to the Black and Teal nation. My name is Cody Taylor (known on the web as TheeCodyTaylor), I’m 23 and was born and raised in Orlando, FL. I’m a sports junkie and have been since I can remember. I grew up a fan of the Jaguars, and as most Jaguar fans, my all-time favorite Jaguar is Fred Taylor. I was also a huge fan of the ‘Greatest Show on Turf’ with Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce, etc. and I was ecstatic when Holt signed with the Jaguars a few years ago. Wrapping up my introduction, I am a Gator fan, and no, I don’t think Tim Tebow should be a Jaguar. Now, on to this Tom Coughlin connection nonsense.

I noticed an interesting post by the Jaguars Facebook page on Sunday, in which asked if Jaguars fans will be pulling for the Giants because of the Tom Coughlin connection. In case you missed it:

At first thought I kind of liked that reason to pull for them, but the more I thought about it, the more it didn’t make sense. I think the biggest reason why most fans would buy into that is because Coughlin was the first Jaguars head coach and he lead the Jags to four-straight playoff appearances.

During his first five seasons as head coach, the Jaguars went 49-31, they then went 19-29 for his final three seasons. Jack Del Rio posted almost the same record for his last three full seasons and fans were ready to fire him about three seasons ago, he finished 20-28. So are Jaguars fans supposed to support and pull for Del Rio if he lands in Denver, as Pro Football Talk is suggesting? Del Rio and Tebow? Anyone? (It should be noted that I’m not a huge fan of PFT)

The Jaguars are 1-1 against the Giants with Coughlin, losing the last meeting 24-20 on November 28, 2010 in New York. You might remember that game, the Jaguars had a 17-6 lead at halftime, only to score just one field goal in the second half. Classic. I just don’t think that in this day of sports, fans can remain that loyal to one specific coach. I understand he still does community work in Jacksonville, but at the end of the day, I just want to see my team win. Coughlin wasn’t doing it, it was time to move on.

Jaguars fans should be pulling for the Giants because of one reason: 8-1. The Patriots are 8-1 all-time against the Jaguars. I don’t want to see anyone smack my team around like that.

How will you be cheering in next week’s Super Bowl? Do you buy into the Coughlin Connection?
