As the NFL preseason kicks off, rookies take center stage, making their professional debuts and aiming to make a lasting impression. Week 1 of the preseason showcased the talents of several promising first-year players (including two on the Jacksonville Jaguars) while also highlighting the challenges they face in their transition to the pros. Let's take a closer look at the winners and losers of the weekend, as well as the key takeaways from their performances.

Beyond the winners and losers, Week 1 of the preseason showcased the talents of many rookies across the league. From strong performances in the passing game to impressive displays of athleticism on defense, the rookies demonstrated their potential to make an impact on their respective teams. While it is still early in their NFL careers, these rookies have laid the foundation for future success and growth.

Winner: Jaguars RB Tank Bigsby, Making an Impact in the Backfield

Tank Bigsby, the rookie running back for the Jacksonville Jaguars, had an impressive preseason debut. Despite limited playing time, Bigsby showed his potential as a dynamic playmaker in the backfield.

Bigsby displayed a combination of power and agility, breaking tackles and gaining yards after contact. His performance highlights his ability to contribute as a short-yardage and goal-line back, adding depth and versatility to the Jaguars' running game.

One of the standout moments of Bigsby's debut came early in the second quarter when he ripped off a 34-yard gain. This explosive run demonstrated his speed and agility and gave a glimpse of his big-play potential. It was a play that caught the attention of both fans and coaches, solidifying his status as a player to watch.

In addition to his electrifying run, Bigsby toted the rock nine times for a total of 52 yards. The carries translated to an average of 5.8 yards per carry, further emphasizing his ability to gain positive yardage consistently. While the sample size is small, these numbers indicate the potential for Bigsby to make a significant impact on the Jaguars' rushing attack.

Loser: Titans QB Will Levis: Ups and Downs in Preseason Debut

Will Levis, the rookie quarterback for the Tennessee Titans, had a mixed performance in his preseason debut. While he displayed good pocket presence and mobility, Levis struggled with accuracy on some throws and faced pressure from the opposing defense.

Despite leading the Titans on a touchdown drive, Levis ended the game with an interception on the team's final drive, missing an opportunity for a potential game-winning score. Despite the setbacks, Levis showed resilience and a willingness to learn from his mistakes, which bodes well for his future development.

Winner: Jaguars TE Brenton Strange, A Promising Target in the Passing Game

Another standout performer for the Jaguars was rookie tight end Brenton Strange. The former Penn State Nittany Lion showcased his skills as a receiving threat, making key blocks and contributing to the success of the offense. Strange didn't blow up the stats sheet with two receptions for eight yards, but he did a lot of good work as a blocker Saturday.

His strong block on safety Markquese Bell helped spring a 34-yard run by Tank Bigsby, demonstrating his ability to make an impact beyond catching passes. With his versatility and solid performance, Strange has positioned himself as a promising target in the Jaguars' passing game.

Loser: Houston Texans QB CJ Stroud, A Challenging Start to the Preseason

CJ Stroud, the rookie quarterback for the Houston Texans, faced a challenging start in his preseason debut. Stroud struggled with decision-making and accuracy, throwing an interception on a third-and-long situation. While it is still early in his NFL journey, Stroud's performance highlights areas for improvement as he adjusts to the speed and complexity of the professional game.

Stroud's first drive of the game ended in disappointment as he threw an interception to Patriots cornerback Jalen Mills. Staring down his intended receiver, he fell victim to a classic rookie mistake. However, he recognized the importance of this learning opportunity and expressed his determination to grow from it.

"Of course, I'm not super excited about how I played," Stroud admitted. "I didn't get to play a lot, but it's about getting my feet in the water, learning from my mistakes, and just keep growing."

Despite the interception, Stroud described his debut as "solid" and acknowledged the significance of preseason games in his development as a quarterback. He understands the need to make smarter decisions that will not only protect the offense but also the defense.

With continued development and experience, Stroud has the potential to grow into a reliable quarterback for the Texans.

Winner:Jaguars OLB Yasir Abdullah, A Force on Defense

Yasir Abdullah, the rookie outside linebacker for the Jacksonville Jaguars, made his presence felt on the defensive side of the ball. With a second-quarter sack and consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks, Abdullah showcased his pass-rushing skills and disruptive abilities.

His performance is a promising sign for the Jaguars' defense, as they look to improve their pass rush and create more turnovers. Abdullah's impact on the game highlights his potential as a key contributor on defense.

Loser: Colts QB Anthony Richardson, Inconsistencies in Preseason Opener

Anthony Richardson showed flashes of potential in his preseason debut but also had moments of inconsistency. The rookie for the Indianapolis Colts demonstrated good poise and strength with the ball in his hands, escaping tackles and making plays on the ground.

However, Richardson struggled with accuracy and made questionable decisions at times. His performance serves as a reminder of the learning curve that comes with transitioning to the NFL.

Richardson's first possession in the preseason game did not go as planned. On the Colts' opening drive, he hesitated and threw a pass off his back foot, resulting in an interception by Bills cornerback Dane Jackson. The interception led to a touchdown for the Bills, setting a disappointing tone for Richardson's debut.

Despite the interception, Richardson's performance throughout the game showed glimpses of his potential. The Colts primarily had him attempt short, quick passes, and he completed seven of 12 attempts for 67 yards.

Richardson's accuracy ran hot and cold but he at times showcased the ability to make precise throws. He also demonstrated his mobility by rushing for seven yards on two carries, with one run called back due to a penalty.

The Colts utilized various offensive strategies during the preseason game to give Richardson valuable experience. They incorporated read-option plays and employed a no-huddle tempo, mimicking the game plan they intend to execute in the regular season. This approach allowed Richardson to familiarize himself with the Colts' offensive system and gain confidence in executing their plays effectively.

While Richardson's debut had its ups and downs, notable highlights showcased his potential. One particular play stood out when he threw a beautiful deep pass to wide receiver Alec Pierce. Although Pierce failed to make the catch, it displayed Richardson's ability to make accurate throws under pressure and in coverage.

The Colts coaching staff recognizes that Richardson's preseason debut was not flawless. The interception he threw on his first drive is a clear area of concern. They will focus on improving his decision-making and ensuring that he does not repeat such mistakes in future games. Richardson's ability to be on the same page as his receivers and the rest of the offense will be crucial for his development.
