The Jacksonville Jaguars visited the Indianapolis Colts in the season opener and they left with their first win of the 2023 season. There were many things to like, including wide receiver Calvin Ridley's amazing debut after his NFL hiatus. On the other hand, there a few things the Jags will need to work on the next few weeks if they want to keep the winning going.
Similarly, there are a handful of players who will need to step up after a not-so-great outing in the season opener. With that in mind, here are three Jaguars whose stock is down following the 31-21 win over Indianapolis.
No. 3 Jaguars whose stock is down after Week 1 win vs. the Colts: Andre Cisco, S
It may be a bit odd to say that safety Andre Cisco's stock is down after forcing a fumble that defensive tackle Angelo Blackson later recovered. However, there were a few instances in which he was out of place and wasn't in a position to make plays, especially against the run.
However, Cisco's biggest mistake came early in the game, when he was flagged for unnecessary roughness. Although tight end Drew Ogletree had already gotten the first down, Cisco's penalty gave the Colts an extra 15 yards.
Cisco made up for it the very next play by dislodging the football from third-string running back Deon Jackson. Defensive tackle Angelo Blackson recovered it and the offense took the field. You could make the case that the turnover nullifies the mistake. However, he needs to clean up that kind of mistakes if he's going to have the breakout season he's expected to have.
No. 2 Jaguars whose stock is down after Week 1 win vs. the Colts: Anton Harrison, OT
Although some rookies have an impact right off the bat, others struggle early on and need time to hit their stride. Others showed flashes followed by rough outings. In Anton Harrison's case, it looks like he'll need time to get acclimated to both the NFL and his new position.
A first-round pick in this year's draft, Harrison struggled in his debut against the Colts. He often lined up against Colts defensive end Kwity Paye and had a hard time containing him. Again, this is expected from first-year players, so it's not time to hit the panic button.
That said, Harrison's struggles made it difficult to run the ball. Similarly, Trevor Lawrence pressured a bit more than the Jags would've liked. Working in Harrison's favor is that he's the only offensive lineman that struggled in the opener. Right guard Brandon Scherff, who eventually left the game with an ankle injury, also had a hard time stopping the Colts' defensive tackles.
This is just one game and there's a reason to believe Harrison will be fine. Putting aside the fact that he just made his first NFL start, he mostly lined up at left tackle at Oklahoma but switched sides with the Jags. Once he gets used to his new position, he should come though. It may not be against the Kansas City Chiefs, or even the following week, but the tools are there for Harrison to excel.
No. 1 Jaguars whose stock is down after Week 1 win vs. the Colts: Tank Bigsby, RB
This feels like nitpicking in what turned out to be a gritty win for the Jaguars. The squad most definitely deserves credit for not throwing in the towel but they'll need to improve in several areas if they don't want to be on the losing end of their next close game.
One such area is the running game. More specifically, the offensive line's ability to pave the way. Against the Colts, the Jaguars' hog mollies had trouble opening lanes for Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby. Although the former was able to create plays and even broke off a long touchdown run, he often found himself nowhere to go.
Rookie Tank Bigsby wasn't nearly as successful as Etienne and was mostly unremarkable in his NFL debut. It's true that he found the end zone at one point but he wasn't able to get anything going when he got the ball, finishing the game with 13 yards on eight carries. While not many pundits expected Bigsby to churn out 100 yards, it was a bit surprising to see him finish the game with such an underwhelming stat line.
After all, Bigsby was a standout in training camp. Later in three preseason games, he averaged 5.7 yards. That wasn't reflected in the season opener. To make matters worse, he was responsible for two turnovers. First, he couldn't come down with a catch that ended in the hands of Colts cornerback Tony Brown.
Later, Bigsby recovered a fumble Trevor Lawrence lost only to drop him. Since it was a live ball, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner picked it up and took it to the house to give the Colts a temporary 21-17 lead.
This might be the weirdest scoop and score ever 😳

The Jaguars ultimately won and this will be a learning experience but the game wouldn't have been so close if it weren't for the rookie's miscues.
