5 Jacksonville Jaguars who must generate early buzz in training camp
No. 4 Jaguars player who must shine in training camp: Jake Luton, QB
You could make the case that there’s nothing particularly thrilling about a third-string quarterback, but the truth is that the Jaguars (and any other team) should always be always for the worst-case scenario.
Trevor Lawrence is firmly entrenched as the starter and C.J. Beathard will enter the 2022 season as the primary backup but if Jacksonville decides to carry three quarterbacks into the season, they’ll have to choose between Jake Luton and E.J. Brown.
Beathard is currently recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered in the offseason, so Luton and Brown might get an extended look. Luton was a sixth-round pick in 2020 and went on to start (and lose) three games for the Jags. The Oregon State product performed well in his NFL debut, going 26-of-38 for 304 yards with one passing touchdown and one interception. However, he didn’t fare well in his next to starts and was eventually benched.
Luton was released before the start of the 2021 season and spent time with the Miami Dolphins and Seattle Seahawks before returning to the Jaguars in the offseason. He will need to show he has improved since his first stint in Jacksonville if he wants to stick around.
Working in Luton’s favor is that he will have a clean slate under head coach Doug Pederson. Then again, the same is true for E.J. Perry, so Luton must make the most out of every rep he gets in training camp.
