No. 5 free agent the Jaguars can sign to fill a need – Brandon Scherff, G.

The Jaguars threw a curveball at everyone when they applied the franchise tag on left tackle Cam Robinson. The move came as a surprise because the team’s brass had not shown any indications they wanted to bring him back but that’s what they did.

With Robinson entrenched at left tackle, it’s highly unlikely that the Jags will pursue Terron Armstead in free agency, which means that they could turn their attention to the interior offensive line. If they want to make a splash signing, they should then target offensive guard Brandon Scherff, who will be one of the most coveted players in the open market.

Scherff ranked 14th in Pro Football Focus’ top 200 list of free agents, and clubs looking for help in the interior offensive line will make him a priority. This could in turn raise the demand and the prices for his services. PFF projects that he will sign a three-year deal worth $50 million with $16.67 guaranteed. Although that seems like a steep price to pay for a guard, he would ensure Trevor Lawrence has the best possible protection up front.

The downside of signing Scherff is that he hasn’t played a full season since 2016 but if the Jags feel comfortable knowing he will miss a few games, they shouldn’t hesitate to make a bid for his services. Jacksonville is in desperate need of difference-makers and they would get one in Scherff.

Other players that deserve consideration: Quinton Spain, Austin Corbett.
